Remembrance: Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG

Today we pause to remember Corporal Cameron Baird, VC, MG, who was killed in action in Afghanistan on 22 June 2013.

Cameron lost his life while leading an assault on an insurgent stronghold in Ghawchak village, Uruzgan Province. During the operation, he advanced on an enemy-held position on three separate occasions, demonstrating extraordinary courage.

For his actions that day, Cameron was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, becoming the 100th Australian recipient of our nation’s highest military honour.

He died as he live, at the front, fully committed, and without hesitation.

Cameron is remembered with deep respect by his mates and all those who served alongside him in the 2nd Commando Regiment. His story is a reminder of the dangers faced by our Special Forces personnel.

We honour his sacrifice and extend our thoughts to the family and friends he left behind.
