Anniversary - Black Hawk tragedy 12 June 1996
Published on June 12, 2026
On this day, we solemnly mark the anniversary of the Black Hawk tragedy of 12 June 1996.
Eighteen members of the Australian Army lost their lives in service to the nation.
Among them were fifteen soldiers of the Special Air Service Regiment and three personnel from the 5th Aviation Regiment.
Each was a valued member of their family and community—fathers, sons, husbands, brothers, and trusted comrades—who committed themselves to the defence of Australia and made the ultimate sacrifice.
We reflect with deep respect on their dedication, their courage, and the enduring legacy they have bestowed upon the nation.
Their memory remains steadfast, honoured in perpetuity and held close in the hearts of all who remember them.
Lest We Forget.
